Message from the National Board

Erica W. Heyse, National DirectorIn a few short weeks the United States Congress will recognize over 250 young people with the Congressional Award Gold Medal. This year's medalists hail from all corners of our great nation, representing thousands of hours of community service, skill building, physical fitness and exploration.

In earning this special honor, these youth have committed themselves to years of personal growth and challenge. They have inspired a spirit of generosity and selflessness in their communities. They have strived to become healthier, stronger and wiser individuals and members of society. They have broken down barriers and often learned to overcome tremendous personal obstacles to meet their goals.

These young people truly deserve our attention and our admiration. I ask for your continued support in honoring them on June 23rd in Washington, DC. I know that their willingness to give their time and energy will continue well into adulthood, becoming our leaders of tomorrow.

Erica W. Heyse
National Director

2010 Congressional Award Gold Medalist

Ohio

A young man from Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio, Robert D. Patton has set many goals for his life. Through the Congressional Award, he has become more interested in government and in the world around him. For Personal Development, Robert learned Japanese and became a certified Red Cross Lifeguard. He was also a member of the Varsity Swimming Team to meet the Physical Fitness requirements.

One of the most important things Robert learned on the way to earning his Congressional Award Gold Medal is very important, “ . . . how the cycle can be broken.” As a volunteer, Robert had the opportunity to invest time in local youth. “They (the children) want to learn to be successful but do not have the habits or help from home to get there on their own. I have seen them begin to see themselves as smart and capable.”

Robert gives these words of advice to current participants, “At times it may seem like a lot, but the pride and sense of accomplishment felt after achieving such an effort, and the character and insight gained, is truly remarkable.”

Advisor Spotlight

Advisor Heather BallHeather Ball

I learned of the Congressional Award through Boy Scouts. The two programs are a great match, particularly for older Scouts, and I greatly enjoy serving as Advisor to them on their path to the Congressional Award Gold Medal. The emphasis on regular community service, challenging adventures, and personal development are goals that both programs stress. As Scouts enter their mid- to-late teens, they begin to appreciate how much the Congressional Award can add to their resume for college or job applications. One college admissions officer wrote how impressed he was that Gold Medalist Chris Marshall had earned this prestigious award – one presented of 300 given out nationwide last year. The program also introduces participants to their local Congressional representative, and has led to internships at their district offices. Both boys and girls can participate in Boy Scouts through Venture Crew, and one of our girls will soon submit her paperwork for the Congressional Award Gold Medal. My favorite quote: “Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve… You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
