Priority Date: August 1
Award:

  1. One-time award
  2. Gold Medal recipients will be awarded $1,000, Silver Medal recipients will be awarded $750, and Bronze Medal recipients will be awarded $500
  3. Awarded at the highest level of achievement at the time of admission

Criteria: Must submit a letter of verification by the student's state representative or University's President. The letter must include the level obtained and the date received.**

Press Release

Purpose:
Honor Mississippi youth with a scholarship for showing a dedication to service and personal development, when they earn Congress’ highest award for youth the Congressional Award.  Mississippi State University believes in giving youth a great education, but they also believe in making youth great citizens and people and the Congressional Award does that. Mississippi State University partners with Mississippi’s 4-H program, which is based in Mississippi State University to help get youth active and earn the Congressional Award.

Leadership: Dr. Linda Mitchell Dr. Linda Mitchell
Linda Mitchell, Ph.D. serves as Creative Programming and Technology Specialist for Mississippi State University Extension Service and is on the State 4-H staff. She taught both elementary and high school classes in the Mississippi Public School system for 17 years. She also worked as Consumer Educator for Litton where she tested recipes and developed cookbooks. She and her husband, Dean have two sons, two lovely daughter-in-laws and a beautiful and talented grandson.

Congressional Delegation:
Mississippi State University works with all Mississippi Members of Congress to help implement the Congressional Award program in Mississippi. When a youth earns the Congressional Award it is important to recognize their prestigious achievement in an appropriate way. The Mississippi Council organizes 2-3 ceremonies each year one in the state capitol and the others in DC in the Mississippi Congressional offices. It is the job of Congressional Award Mississippi Council to maintain great relations and to work closely with Mississippi Members of Congress and their offices.  Mississippi State University President Mark Keenum was honored by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, Senator Roger Wicker, Senator Thad Cochran, Congressman Gene Taylor, Congressman Gregg Harper, and Congresswoman Blackburn for the leadership role he has shown with the Congressional Award program.

Scholarship:
Mississippi State University presents a $1,000 scholarship to youth who have earned the gold Congressional Award medal and are enrolled at MSU. Mississippi State University agrees with the  Congressional Award that setting goals in the four areas; volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness, and exploration are beneficial to youth. We see the scholarship as a way to encourage young people to challenge themselves. Mississippi State University also wants to honor Congress’ highest award for youth.

  • Youth who receive the Congressional Award, receive the highest award given by the United States Congress to youth.
  • Mississippi Youth who earn a Congressional Award Gold Medal receive a $1,000 scholarship to Mississippi State University.

  • Youth establish networks in their communities and the Award provides tangible evidence of success by using their record of achievement in their college, scholarship, or job applications.
