June 28 - July 5, 2009, Washington, D.C.

With the changing of the guard in the White House-and its ripple effect on the country and the world-this summer promises to be a particularly exciting time to be in the nation's capital. There is no better time to step behind the scenes and examine the inner workings of our government first-hand.

In the midst of important debates across all three branches of government that will shape domestic and international policy well into the 21st Century, the insights you will gain into democracy, public policy, and governmental operations will give you a clearer and more detailed look at public policy than can be found printed in any textbook or posted on any news website.

As a Presidential Classroom Scholar, you will get a backstage pass to the very places where policy is brokered and news headlines are made. Consider it fieldwork for tomorrow's leaders. Washington, D.C. is your classroom, and your teachers are insiders on Capitol Hill, journalists, economist, defense officials, and diplomats who are making and influencing public policy everyday.

Your assignment as a Presidential Classroom Scholar, is to get the inside scoop from Washington, D.C. experts, debate domestic and foreign policy decisions with your fellow scholars, and develop an informed position based on the issues of the day and most up to date and inside information available to those not already working in government.

Presidential Classroom is a non-profit civic education organization founded in 1968 in the spirit of John F. Kennedy, who challenged young Americans to get involved in public service. Since then, more than 120,000 of the best and brightest high school students have participated in our dynamic programs, and gained insight, valuable experience, and unprecedented access to the federal government and the leaders who shape public policy.

Please Note: Due to security restrictions, the 4th of July Presidential Classroom Scholars program is limited to the first 240 participants. If the recipient of the scholarship is unable to attend the 4th of July – Presidential Classroom Scholars program, he or she will have the opportunity to select an alternative summer program, such as: Communication and Journalism, Intelligence and National Security, Law, Justice and Human Rights, Future World Leader Summit, Global Health and the Environment and Science, Technology and Public Policy.
