Stephen Sobonya was born and raised in Fresno, California and moved to Washington DC in 2020 to do a year of service with AmeriCorp. Stephen attended California State University Sacramento and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies. Through his year of service with AmeriCorp and a summer congressional internship, Stephen became passionate about youth development and public service. 

Stephen is currently earning his Masters degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution at The American University. Outside of work and school, Stephen enjoys cooking, fitness, learning languages, and spending time with his family and friends.

Why I Joined the Congressional Award

Community service is important to any and all communities. It is important to include the youth across the United States and emphasize their contributions. The Congressional Award provides an opportunity for the youth across the United States to contribute and interact with their communities.

Program Area Highlight

Stephen dedicates his time to practicing conflict resolution and mediation to communities and individuals. He is passionate about human rights, access to public services, education, and economic development.
